Born in The Hague (The Netherlands) 28 May 1934 \u2013 \u2020 23 February 2011.\u00a0Received his first piano lessons at the age of seven.\u00a0ln 1952 he attended the Royal Conservatory; finished in 1958.\u00a0Became one of the first bebop pianists in Holland.\u00a0Had his first professional engagement with Don Byas in 1952.\u00a0Since then has performed with many international jazz stars:\u00a0Phil Woods, Woody Shaw, Zoot Sims, Tom Harrell, Stan Getz , Art Farmer, Oliver Nelson, Donald Byrd, Oscar Pettiford, Clark Terry, Jimmy Woode, Ray Nance, Ben Webster, Maynard\u00a0Ferguson, Benny Bailey, Sahib Shihab, Thad Jones, Mark Murphy, Charlie Mariano, Mel Lewis, Sal Nistico, Billy Eckstine, Charlie Persip, Leo Wright, Bob Berg, Billy Higgins, Sam Jones,\u00a0Louis Hayes, Dakota Staton, Michael Brecker, Conte Candoli, Slide Hampton, Frank Rosolino, Chet Baker, Lou Donaldson, Joe Henderson, John Marshall and on two piano\u2019s with\u00a0Barry Harris.\u00a0Wrote arrangements for Dutch radio.<\/strong><\/p>\n

ln 1990, at the jazz festival in Sophia, he was asked to substitute for pianist Tommy Flanagan. His big band \u2013 which included Sal Nistico, Herb Geller, Dusko Gojkovic, Rick Keefer, Ferdinand Povel, Herman Schoonderwalt, Rob Langereis, Wim Overgaauw, Ack van Rooyen,\u00a0Charlie Mariano, etc. \u2013 opened the first North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland.\u00a0Reconstructed the famous Miles Davis \u201cBirth of the Cool\u201d sessions for Dutch radio in 1985.\u00a0Was the first in Holland to introduce jazz music into the domain of the classical music schools and conservatories in the seventies. Helped organize the jazz departments of all main\u00a0conservatories in the Netherlands.\u00a0Taught piano, arranging and theory, and held ensemble classes at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.\u00a0Was awarded a \u201cBird Prize\u201d for \u201cSpecial Appreciation\u201d at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 1991.\u00a0Has authored four theory books on jazz improvisation accompanied by ten play-along CDs.\u00a0Issued a two-volume method on \u201cJazz Harmony At The Piano\u201d, specifically for beginning and intermediate students; required subject matter at the jazz departments of the conservatories\u00a0of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague among others.\u00a0Performed frequently with his own trio and with the John Marshall-Ferdinand Povel Quintet.<\/strong><\/div>\n
